Stainless Steel Aseptic Pharmaceutical Split Butterfly AB Valve

TheSplit Butterfly AB Valve, also known as the Alpha-Beta valveorcontained transfer valve, is a hygienic powder-handling valve engineered for sterile, contained product transfer between vessels, isolators, reactors, IBCs and process equipment. Unlike a conventional butterfly valve that opens directly to atmosphere, the AB valve separates into an active half and a passive half; each half carries its own disc, so the product remains fully enclosed during connection, transfer and disconnection.

Built in AISI 316L / AISI 304 stainless steel with pharmaceutical-grade seals, it is widely used for API charging, tablet/capsule handling, freeze-dryer loading, fermentation feed and any process where operator exposure, cross-contamination or environmental contamination must be eliminated.

How the Split Butterfly Valve Works

The AB valve uses a dual-disc, contained-transfer design. The active half is mounted on the receiving vessel or isolator; the passive half is mounted on the feeding vessel. When the two halves are docked and locked, the discs open simultaneously to form one continuous, enclosed flow path. Powders or granules flow directly from the feed vessel into the receiver without contacting the surrounding environment.

Once the transfer is complete, the discs close before the two halves separate. Each half therefore seals independently, so no residual product is exposed and no dust escapes into the room. This makes the AB valve ideal for handling potent, toxic, sterile or moisture-sensitive powders compared with a standard butterfly valve that opens to atmosphere and cannot guarantee containment.

Application

The stainless steel aseptic split butterfly AB valve is widely used in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food processing and fine chemical plants where sterile, contained powder transfer is required. Typical applications include API charging to reactors, tablet press / capsule filler feeding, freeze-dryer loading and unloading, IBC drum discharge, isolator / RABS charging, and fermentation feed ports. It ensures clean, safe and compliant handling of active, sterile or sensitive powders.
